Mubarak discusses ME peace, economic cooperation in three meetings
At the Presidential Palace in Heliopolis, President Mubarak
held a series of meetings dealing with regional and international
developments, and bilateral relations between Egypt, Philippines, Japan and
France. The President first received Philippines President Gloria M.arroyo
who is the first official visit to Egypt at this level for nearly three
decades, then Henri Guaino, the advisor of French President Nicolas Sarkozy
and who is also in charge of the file of the Union for the Mediterranean,
and Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone as a part of his Middle East
tour. Presidential Spokesman Soliman Awwad said the meeting of Mubarak and
Philippines President Gloria M.arroyo dealt with the latest developments in
the Middle East since the recent Israeli war on the Gaza Strip as well as
underway efforts to clinch a Palestinian-Israeli truce, lift the siege
imposed on the Gaza Strip and achieve inter-Palestinian rapprochement.
Meanwhile, Macapagal-Arroyo said she is looking forward to enhancing
cooperation between the two countries, adding that trade exchange between
the two sides stood at 32 million dollars in 2007.
She lauded the efforts exerted by Egypt within the framework of the
Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) to realize reconciliation between
the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.
Awwad said also that President Hosni Mubarak held a meeting with the French President's envoy who presented a message of appreciation from President Nicolas Sarkozy on Egyptian-French stands regarding the Middle East peace process and Egypt's contacts to reach cooling off in the occupied territories. The message also covered ways to activate joint projects within the Union for the Mediterranean, he added. President Mubarak expounded the latest regional developments and Egypt's recent and future contacts with the regional and international parties concerned, he said. And about the meeting of President Hosni Mubarak and Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone Presidential Spokesman Suleiman Awwad said that President Mubarak conferred with Nakasone on the latest developments in the Middle East. The President posted Nakasone on his standpoint with regard to means of dealing with the current regional situation, Awwad said.
Nakasone forwarded a message to Mubarak from Japanese Premier
Taro Aso who invited the Egyptian president again to visit Japan.During the
meeting, the president warned of the spread of nuclear weapons in the
region, urging the international community to handle both the Iranian and
Israeli nuclear files on equal footing, Awwad said.
The talks also tackled ways of boosting bilateral relations, the spokesman
said.
Asked to comment on Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah's recent attempt to deny his party's relationship with the subversive cell caught in Egypt, Awwad said that there is no problem whatsoever between Egypt and Lebanon. Egyptian-Lebanese relations are fraternal and cordial, but Egypt pays no attention to a person who is attempting to form a state Lebanon.
Egypt also seeks not to enter in diatribes. “This problem has
nothing to do with Hizbollah's religious affiliations as a Shiite party,”
added Awwad. Egypt is angry with Iran and Hizbollah because of their stances
that seek destabilization of the Egyptian national security and negatively
affect the Arab identity. Awwad noted that Egypt and Israel are holding
contacts to set a date for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit
to Egyp

Ambassador Suleiman Awwad the Presidential Spokesman said the Egyptian citizens health is much more important than any criticism adding all measures taken by the government for containing the risks of the disease are aimed at preserving the health of the Egyptian citizens.Awwad said slaughtering pigs and preserving meat in refrigerators is an expensive process, but the government wants to protect Egyptians from swine flu. If the government has not taken this measure after two meetings under President Mubarak, it would have been accused of dereliction of duty, he said, adding that Pope Shenouda III of Alexandria and Patriarch of Saint Mark Diocese has supported the move. The measures taken by Egypt were meant mainly to protect Egyptians from the H1N1 virus, Awwad said.
