Mubarak presents developing countries' vision at Milan Economic Forum
President Hosni Mubarak warned that advanced nations' policies and measures
to get out of the global financial crisis might augment the developing
countries' suffering. Addressing the Economic and Financial Forum for the
Mediterranean, held in the Italian city of Milan on Monday, the President
called for a prompt action vis-à-vis the impact of the global financial
meltdown on developing countries in order to bridge a yawning gap between
rich and poor nations. Mubarak referred to the negative social and economic
impacts triggered by the international financial crisis, especially on
extremism, illegal immigration, organized crime, and human trafficking
phenomena.
He said developing countries bear the brunt of this financial crunch, citing
present state of depression on such countries' exports and reduction of
foreign investments lured by them.
He said the gathering is addressing three main issues of special importance
to Mediterranean cooperation covering energy domains, upgrading micro,
small- and medium-sized enterprises and overhauling main infrastructure
networks. He highlighted an Egyptian approach to upgrade youths'
capabilities and press ahead with policies meant to train and rehabilitate
such cadres as well as provide job opportunities for them.
